The Metropole Hotel
This Monte Carlo classic was comprehensively refurbished in 2004 by the world-famous Parisian designer Jacques Garcia, and has since reclaimed its rightful place as one of the principality's plushest hotels. It's stuffy, snooty and seriously expensive; but if you're looking to live life en luxe, then the Metropole is a tough act to follow.
The posh, palatial-like public areas - including a chic cocktail bar, an astonishingly upmarket gourmet restaurant and a stately antique-filled lounge that would put most aristocratic châteaux to shame - are among the most beautiful anywhere in Monaco. Most of the 150-odd rooms and suites have been overhauled in lavish fashion, combining classic Monte Carlo style (thickly-quilted beds, deep armchairs, rich color schemes) - with all the high-tech mod-cons you could wish for (king-sized work desk, fax line, dual phone line, high speed net access); while the varnished wood panelling, silky-smooth marble tiles and smart his-and-hers sinks distinguish the top-notch bathrooms.
The Hotel Hermitage
Don those diamonds, dig out those designer threads and remember to pack the all-important platinum card: the Hôtel Hermitage is another of Monaco's super-swish pamper palaces. It sits on a quiet, tree-shaded square dripping with designer stores and big-name boutiques. With a facade that takes its architectural cue from the Prince of Monaco's own palace, the Hermitage certainly isn't short on style. Strolling into the hushed lobby feels like stumbling into the pages of Vogue magazine - the concentration of Rolexes, Manolo Blahniks and Versace handbags on display would send most fashionistas into overdrive, and even the impeccably-coiffured receptionists and brass-buttoned bellhops look suitably chic. Hand-carved frescoes, chandeliers and antiques cover practically every inch of this supremely elegant confection - there's even a stunning 'Winter Garden' topped by a dome designed by Gustave Eiffel, as well as a glass-walled spa and a beautiful Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking the port. The rooms are refreshingly simple and understated, decorated in a choice of cool blues, classic golds or stylish crimsons.
